Left Handed People - Health Issues
Because of the way a left handed person's brain is cross-wired to their bodies, left handed people tend to do things differently as well as think differently than their right handed counterparts and this can have some bizarre influence on their health.
Left Handed People - Body Control
One example of this is the little known fact that the left hand is better for reading Braille than the right hand as it reports to the right hemisphere - better at spatial intelligence patterns which makes our right ear better at processing language.
It is widely believed that attempting to change natural left-handed people to become a right handed may cause stuttering. An example of this was the left handed King George VI.
It is thought that a greater percentage of left handed people suffer from speech defects compared to right handers meaning there is probably a common link between left-handedness and speech defects.
Some left-handed people, including two famous lefties Lewis Carroll and Leonardo da Vinci often slip unintentionally into a strange practice called mirror writing. Mirror writing means instead of starting on the the left side of the paper to write, some left handed people start writing on the right side of the page writing backwards. The only way for non mirror writing people to read what was written would be to hold it up to a mirror. Strange as it sounds, all left-handed people that mirror write can read it as if it were written normally. It was said that Leonardo da Vinci would mirror write notes to himself, but would write normally when he knew other people would read it.
Stuttering and dyslexia occur's more often in left handed people.
Left Handed People - More Health Issues
More often than not , left handed children reach puberty about 4 to 5 months later than right handed children.
In a recent report by University of British Columbia Prof. Stanley Coren, it was suggested that left handed people on average have a shorter lifespan than their counterparts. Prof. Coren's claim was quickly refuted by other scientists and is currently being studied further by a team of British scientists.
Dangers That Lurk For Left Handed People
There are a plethora of incoveniences, obstacles and dangers that lefties may run into during their daily lives that can be very inconvenient, frustrating or outright dangerous and in most cases there is not anything that can be done to change it. The only thing that southpaws can do is adapt and adjust.
Here are some things that give left handed people problems:
Chainsaws
Sadly, whoever designed chainsaws, they made them so there is no way for a left-handed person to use them safely, i.e. left finger on the trigger, without cutting your arm off. We are not aware of anyone who makes a left-handed chainsaw - probably because it would be too dangerous if a righty attempted to use it! We sure could use a lefty chainsaw designer.
Circular Saws
Circular saws are the ones that carpenters can't live without. They have a rapidly revolving circular blade for cutting straight lines through sheets of plywood, paneling and 2x4's. They have the same problem as the chainsaw, which is virtually impossible to use left-handed, i.e. left-hand on the trigger and the main handle and right hand on the forward support. There is added fun with these because the sawdust usually blasts out of an exit point on the right of the saw, safely out of the way for a right-hander, but all over a left-hander. I wonder how many left handed people grow up to be carpenters?
New York Subways & London Underground Barriers
If you have ever had the pleasure to travel on the London Underground trains or the subways of New York you will know the problem. They both have access barriers at each stop that requires each passenger to put in a valid ticket or token in order to get on the train or subway. You have probably guessed what the difficulties would be for a left-handed person by now. That's correct, the slot where you insert the ticket and token is located on the right hand side of the barrier which has fooled many a left handed passenger to mistakinly insert the token or ticket into the wrong slot. It may sound humorous now but imagine a station full of New Yorkers during rush hour who will stop at nothing to get home and this idiot left handed person has just put their last token in the wrong slot and he can't move an inch because it's wall to wall right handed people who have no sympathy, only dark thoughts. You have just shared a brief moment in the life of a left handed person.
